OLYMPIA (AP) – The Washington Transportation Commission is expected to vote later this year on a proposal to replace the gas tax with a pay-per-mile system. The vote will take place Dec. 17, after the commission is expected to receive a report in October from a panel that has studied the new type of tax, […]
I wonder if the study included the fact that traffic backups contributed to the gas tax revenue, while pay per mile will not. You see, when you are setting in traffic the tax revenue is ticking up, while using the pay per mile the tax revenue stay the same. Traveling 5 miles in a traffic jam is still 5 miles.
I think this is in preparation for the electric vehicles that are rolling off the assembly lines. No gas tax there, pay per mile is the only avenue of revenue “for now”.
Will the current Washington gas tax which I understand is the highest rate in the union be officially repealed? Think about it, the highest rate in the union and yet, they want more. gimmie, gimmie, gimmie some more!!!
Which reminds me of the story of the dog crossing a bridge, looks over the edge and see another dog with a bone. The dog drops his bone and dives over the edge after the other dog (which was his own reflection). Not only did he lose the bone he already had but almost drowned.
I guess it will be voted on and the details will be sorted out later. Like, how will this affect businesses and will they pass on the cost to their customers who may not even drive? How will the accounting take place? Will you be required to go in and have your odometer read to tally up your debt? What will happen if you can’t pay your debt. Will your vehicle be impounded or will it be reported to a collection agency eventually affecting your credit rating/insurance/interest rates? I guess the old abandoned emissions stations can be recycled since in 2019 emission testing will no longer be required. What about the guy who can’t afford to get his mechanical speedometer fixed and is now using a GPS to monitor his speed? What about those who have the where-with-all to carry out speedometer oriented cheating. I know, I know, I know there are laws that prohibit speedometer tampering. Due to selective enforcement, certain criminals will not be sought after, besides, laws has never stopped criminals, it only stop law abiding citizens.
