1. Paul Cuffe, Philanthropist, merchant, sea captain and abolitionist.

2. Willie Brown, delta blues guitarist and singer.

3. Miriam Matthews, historian, activist and lecturer.

4. Lem Johnson, jazz saxophonist who played both tenor and soprano saxophones.

5. Bennett McVey Stewart, High school principal, professor and a former U. S. Representative, elected to the Ninety-sixth Congress, serving on the Committee on Appropriations.

6. Willie Nix, blues singer and drummer , active in Memphis , Tennessee in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Memphis, as a child he learnt to tap dance , and later became a part of the blues scene that grew up around Beale Street (see Memphis Blues ). He recorded for the Sun Records label and others in the 1950s. He also later recorded in Chicago . Nix wrote the songs “Nervous Wreck” and “Prison Bound Blues”, and worked with Willie Love , Sonny Boy Williamson II , Joe Hill Louis , as well as B.B. King .

7. Abbey Lincoln, actress/singer (“Nothing But a Man”, “Mo Better Blues”), is born.

8. Dorian Harewood, Actor, He first garnered attention for his portrayal of Simon Haley (father of author Alex Haley) in the ABC miniseries Roots.

9. David maurice Robinson, retired American NBA basketball player, who played center for the San Antonio Spurs for his entire NBA career.
